Hyundai Equus Gets Priced At $58,000

If the Hyundai Equus doesn’t wake you up to the fact that something has drastically changed at Hyundai, we don’t know what will. The brand has quickly gone from an also-ran to a product leader in the marketplace .

Hyundai has consistently pushed the envelope at a breakneck pace with its rear-wheel drive Genesis sedan and Coupe models. The best example yet of how far Hyundai has progressed comes in the form of the Equus – and its price tag.

$58,000 – yes you read that right….$58,000 for a Hyundai. 5 or 10 years ago that would have been unthinkable. However, today it is a different story.

The Equus differentiates itself from failed attempts at the luxury segment such as Volkswagen’s Phaeton by its value proposition. While the Phaeton was priced similarly to established competitors, the Equus undercuts them significantly.

Second, development cost and need to recoup investment is much less – the Equus business case made sense selling exclusively in its home market of South Korea. In the United States, selling the $58,000 Equus improves Hyundai’s image and makes selling $20-30K Sonatas all that much easier.

To make things simple, there is two models available: the $58,000 Equus Signature and the $64,500 Equus Ultimate. The Equus Ultimate is primarily concerned with an added luxury experience for the rear passengers.

Ultimate has a luxurious four-passenger configuration with 50/50 split rear seats, passenger-side rear seat leg support and massage system, cooled rear seats and a rear-seat entertainment system with eight-inch monitor.

It doesn’t end there though, there is also a thermoelectric rear center console refrigerator, rear-seat power up/down head restraints with manual tilt, rear-seat, illuminated vanity mirrors, forward-view cornering camera and power trunk lid. What a list!

One of the attractive things about the Equus is the amazing level of service Hyundai has put in place for buyers. The car has maintenance covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles and that includes things such as complimentary oil and filter changes, brake pads and rotors, wiper blades, and car battery.

There is also valet pickup and drop-off of the vehicle at your home for any servicing, with a Genesis or Equus loaner vehicle provided while the car is at the dealership. How is that for pampered luxury service?

Competitors will have to step up their game now, as they aren’t offering that level of service. That could end up being a big selling point for the Equus, as that isn’t expected at the $58,000 level.

Now the question is sales figures – will American luxury buyers respond to a $58,000 Hyundai?

New Hyundai To Upgrade Tau V-8

The automotive industry is a cutthroat industry – with many available options and competitive vehicles vying for the consumer’s dollar. A new car can come along and change the dynamics of the segment it competes in.

Hyundai has changed the dynamics with its lineup of new products. The remarkable transformation has extended from the mainstream to luxury spectrum. With these new models under their belt, Hyundai still isn’t content to rest on its laurels.

Autoblog has attended a Hyundai product briefing that revealed details about the brand’s next-generation V-8 engine for use in high-end products.

We know that Hyundai didn’t spare much expense with its luxury forays, developing a new rear-wheel drive platform and V-8 to properly compete in the luxury market.

The V-8 powerplant is dubbed “Tau” and it powers the Equus and Genesis. The 4.6L unit currently produces a stellar 370 horsepower and 324 pound feet of torque. Hyundai is planning on significantly upgrading that package soon though.

Changes include bumping the V-8′s displacement to 5.0-liters and using direct injection to produce 429 HP and 376 lb-ft of torque. That works out to an increase of 59 hp and 52 ft-lbs of torque over the current engine setup.

Confirming speculation, Hyundai is also working on an eight-speed automatic. Mated to the new V-8 it should ensure an increase of fuel economy by one mile per gallon, to 18/26.

Nice one, Hyundai! We’re glad to see them relentlessly working to improve their products. That is what is going to take to successfully compete in the long run.

New Hyundai Veloster In Motion

After much anticipation Velo Star concept, Hyundai unveiled its production Velo Star North American International Auto Show this week.

Velo Star Hyundai is the sixth vehicle 24 / 7 version 2.0 of the initiative (seven new models in 24 months), the new Tucson, Sonata, Equus, Elantra included and will be completed with a new subcompact Accent comes later this year.

For now, the latest Hyundai Velo Star gathering attention form the press. We were not too enthusiastic about the misinterpretation of the Hyundai car liquid sculptures' design language.

We speculated that it may grow on us, and it seems a bit over time and video photography. Hyundai has released a video where the car. It's not terribly exciting, production or background music, but it does not show two Velo esters move. Check it out below.

New Hyundai US CEO Confirms Five-Door

Hyundai US CEO Confirms Five-Door Accent To "Kick Fiesta's Butt"Hyundai CEO John Krafcik faced Jalopnik readers today and took the opportunity to announce big news for the North American market: the five-door version of the much-improved new Accent's coming to the United States and "it'll kick the Fiesta's butt."

In our Ask Me Anything segment — where we push automotive execs onto Jalopnik's passionate readers — reader fhrblig asked:

New Hyundai Veloster Hot Hatch Asks "Honda Who?"

When we first details about Hyundai Velo Star curious three-door hatchback heard + We asked if it was "not to build a Honda CRX?" With two six-speed gearbox, power-frames-weight ratio of 40 mpg The answer is yes. Hell yes
By the end of production in 2012 Hyundai Velo Star is a curious front-wheel drive hatchback, offers a complete three-hinged doors (one driver's side, two seats) and the back design provides an aggressive new corporate nose, the new Sonata and The i40 behind a car with European-inspired motorcycle helmet.

Hyundai Veloster Hot Hatch Asks "Honda Who?"The aggressive and sporty exterior is supported by the 1.6-liter four-cylinder direct injection Gamma with dual variable valve timing (CVVT-D), which is a relatively strong 138 hp and 123 Nm of torque to offer the small shear. Though not as powerful as a 180-hp Scion TC, the most powerful car in this class, compared to £ 2,584 Hyundai Heavy with his £ 3,060 - nearly £ 500 difference.

weight ratio and up to 40 mpg the answer's yes. Hell yes. At a press conference, Hyundai American director John Krafcik: "Something I'm Colin Chapman would be pleased."
Both programs are offered with a six-speed fiber to the purists and the new Hyundai-developed six-speed double-clutch (DCT) for all others. Hyundai estimates of the combined DCT small engine and low weight will be a stellar 40 mpg.
Hyundai Veloster Hot Hatch Asks "Honda Who?"
No one has yet been able Velo Star, at least not one who can speak for all comparisons with CRX and CR-Z will take place in a hypothetical country. But in a hypothetical country Velo Star smoker lower fuel consumption, more power, lighter, better transmissions, and aesthetically appealing.
Hyundai, and Honda is marketing the car as a "Joy Ride" and refers to the McPherson strut front and coil springs. There is also what we say in the rear torsion axle at the back, which I think is marketing speak about change of torsion bar Twist. Cars are for standard 17-inch alloy wheels with 18-inch.
Hyundai Veloster Hot Hatch Asks "Honda Who?"
Finally Velo Star competition with more than one of the Mini and the Honda has more power in the package weighs more than three-door Cooper, but less than five-door Clubman. Velo Star will go on sale this summer with a starting price around $ 17,000.

Hyundai Super Bowl Commercials Debut Early!

Being the experts on Super Bowl car commercials, we can do things like bring you the ads before they even air as part of our Super Bowl Ad Watch. Below we have the five advertisements Hyundai will show during and before the big game. Three of the ads will run during pre-show, also sponsored by Hyundai, and "Bosses" and "Contract" will run during the second and third quarters. Our perspective on these new advertisements below.

Title: Contract
Grade: C
Message: Hyundai has your back if you lose your job or income.
Our Take: For people who are freaked out about the economy the message may hit home, but it's just so boring.

Title: Commitment
Grade: C+
Message: If you're willing to commit to Hyundai, they're willing to commit to you.
Our Take: The 'commitment isn't scary' approach of this commercial for the Hyundai Assurance program works better than the "Contract" commercial because it implies we're all in the economic mess together. Still, it's rather boring.

Title: Columns
Grade: B
Message: The Hyundai Genesis won the 2009 North American Car Of The Year, something the automaker is obviously proud of as evidenced by the bragging.
Our Take: The commercial is good and, given Hyundai can afford multiple Super Bowl spots, there's nothing wrong with a little boastfullness. What really sells it, though, is the clip of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

Grade: B+
Message: By winning the 2009 North American Car Of The Year award we've put BMW and Lexus on notice.
Our Take: Because everyone may not be cool with the idea of buying Korean while the American economy is hurting, Hyundai is smart enough to take aim at the Germans and the Japanese. The portrayals of the two "axis powers" is a bit over the top, but it makes the ad work.

Title: Epic Lap
Grade: A-
Message: You want the Genesis Coupe so badly you'll go to EditYourOwn.com and re-edit your own commercial, which isn't up yet.
Our Take: Yeooooowww! Much like the 2010 Hyundai Genesis reveal, this car is all about power slides and burnouts. What does Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins have to do with driving an epic lap? We have no idea. But we give the 1990s alternarock icon credit for mixing together a sweet commercial.

SEMA 2008: Hyundai Reveals Three Genesis Coupe Projects

First, there's the Rhys Millen Racing Genesis Coupe, with a 2.0 liter 4-banger mated to a turbocharger and a HKS sequential transmission to manage the extra fly-wheel spin. Hyundai calls this a "fully functioning race car" that is track-ready, with a turbocharger courtesy of Turbonetics and all body panels replaced by carbon-fiber.

Second comes the Street Concepts take on the Genesis Coupe, with long-time Hyundai tuner Shawn Williams cloaking this 3.8 liter V6 with his Stealth Fighter conceptual design, which includes camouflage (black) paint.

Lastly (of the coupes, that is) there's the HKS. Another 2.0 liter turbo, this time with HKS's own turbocharger and its Hipermax III "fully adjustable" suspension.

Hyundai wants to add a little tuner zing to it's image and so it has offered up several models for the SEMA show. Those models include these three Genesis coupes, along with three other Genesis sedans (more on those in a separate story), which showcase the Korean brand's rear-wheel drive architecture.

Hyundai may be an Asian brand but it's obvious it's their US division putting out these press releases because they offer no details on engine or track performance on these race cars. Those, one has to assume, will be forthcoming. Or maybe these cars aren't real and just for show. More Photos

First Spied shots:Hyundai 4-Door Coupe

These are the very first shots of a new model from Korea that is to become Hyundai’s answer to the Mercedes CLS and VW Passat CC or Opel Insignia: a four-door coupé-like saloon.

Spy snappers caught it undergoing handling-tests on a lonely test-track in northern France. As it’s going to have similar dimensions, we reckon the new car is going to make use of the chassis and underpinnings of the new Sonata.

It’s also very likely, the new four-door coupé will get the Sonata’s choice of engines, namely the 165-hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder and 250-hp 3.3-litre V6 petrol engines plus the 2.0-litre CRDi diesel with 150 hp. We do not expect the car to be available before late in 2009 or even only in 2010.

Benzs.blogspot_Hyundai Announces Genesis Coupe Performance Specs

Hyundai hopes to sell 40,000 Genesis Coupes annually, 5,000 in Korea and 35,000 in overseas markets. The Genesis Coupe's target customer is a middle-aged male (64 percent) looking for best performance for the price. Although Hyundai used the Infiniti G37 as the benchmark, targeted competitors include the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Nissan Altima Coupe and Mustang.

Hyundai launched its Genesis Coupe in the Korean market this week with performance specs finally divulged. The first engine is Hyundai's Theta 2.0-liter turbo which produces in Korea 223 horsepower
on premium fuel and 210 horsepower (regular fuel). For the U.S. market it is rated at 210hp @ 6000rpm while peak torque is 299 Nm (220 lb-ft) @ 2,000rpm (302 Nm / 223 lb-ft for the U.S. market) propelling the rear-wheel-drive car from 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 8.3 seconds.

Korean retail prices start at 23,200,000 Korean won ($18,728 USD) for the base version and with full options, including the V-6 Lamda RS engine, the Coupe tops out at 33,920,000 Korean ($27,382 USD). U.S. pricing will be announced closer to its market launch in spring 2009.

The second engine according to Hyundai sets a new benchmark for the most affordable 300-horsepower sport coupe. The range topping 3.8-liter DOHC V6 Lambda RS engine produces 310 horsepower (premium fuel), 306 horsepower (regular fuel), (U.S. rated at 306 horsepower) @6300rpm and peak torque to 361 Nm (266 lb-ft) @ 4,700rpm resulting in 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in just 6.3 seconds. Reports of a 0-60mph time have come in at 5.9 seconds.

Hyundai i800 Launched in Europe

What you see above is the Hyundai i800 as known as the H1 over in Korea. Not exactly the most inspiring design in the Hyundai portfolio, but if you have a huge family and a tight budget, you can't go wrong with the new 8-seater.

Tony Whitehorn, managing director of Hyundai UK said: “anyone wanting to carry eight people in car-like comfort currently has to take two cars – or spend a lot more than £20,000. We think the i800 will prove massively popular with families and businesses who need to move people in style.”

Even with eight people seated in the vehicle, the i800 still has 851 liters of space in the boot – twice as much as the average estate. Thanks for this space must go to the vehicles exterior dimensions, length stands at 5.125 metres and the width measures at 1.920 metres – try getting that into a tight parking sport before getting your 6 children out the back. Power comes courtesy of the new 2.5-litre four-cylinder CRDi diesel engine, which is intercooled and features a variable-geometry turbo power peaks at 170hp.

The i800 will go on sale in the UK on 20th June with a price of £19,495.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Revealed in NY

Any doubts as to the ability of the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe to perform were quickly dispelled in New York as a pair of the cars greeted the press by sliding wildly around the Javits Center Galleria with stunt drivers at the wheel, backed by a pounding rock'n'roll soundtrack। With rear-wheel drive and a choice of turbocharged four-cylinder or V6 power, the new coupe represents a significant push into the sports car market for Hyundai. Shown as a concept in Los Angeles last year and carrying hints of past Hyundai concept cars, the Genesis Coupe is an Infiniti G37-sized car with serious sporting potential. It goes on sale in the spring of 2009 as a 2010 model.

Engine choices are a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 212 horsepower and a 3.8 liter V6 shared with the Genesis sedan that's good for 306 horses. Both engines feature standard six-speed manual transmissions and dual cat-back exhaust systems, and a limited-slip rear is available as well. The hot setup will be the Genesis Coupe SE, with big Brembo brakes at all four corners and a track-tuned suspension. Expect more details as the year goes by.

Set for public debut at the New York Auto show in two days, press photos of the yet to be revealed Hyundai Genesis Coupe have leaked. Sent to us as a tip (thanks Evan), the photos were found over at MyRide.com who added these pictures to an old article from the Genesis Coupe Concept debut in Los Angeles last year.

If the new Genesis sedan is an indicator of things to come, the Genesis Coupe, as the Tiburon replacement, will be a far superior car with greater quality, performance and driving dynamics. With a rear wheel drive platform and the entry level engine as a 2.0 liter turbo producing 215hp, the Genesis Coupe is off to a great start. But Hyundai is out for blood and takes it a bit further with a 3.8 liter V6 making approximately 300hp. As a result, the Genesis Coupe is going to get a lot of attention in New York and it's no surprise why.

Stay tuned for official info as it breaks.
